“Someone told me the delightful story of the crusader who put a chastity belt on his wife and gave the key to his best friend for safekeeping, in case of his death. He had ridden only a few miles away when his friend, riding hard, caught up with him, saying ‘You gave me the wrong key!” ― Anaïs Nin
Every time I think I have heard it all, I switch on the radio on the way to work and…boom!
Apparently Ashley Madison is not the friendly blonde from the office. In fact, she is not a person at all. She is a website that facilitates affairs between members or to quote them “Ashley Madison is the online personals & dating destination for casual encounters, married dating, discreet encounters and extramarital affairs.” A cheater’s paradise if you will. In fact, the Ashley Madison Tagline is “Life is short. Have an affair.”
The website is international and has a huge following across the world. So much so in fact that someone from the Business Insider went undercover to learn the workings of the website and came up with this story: I spent a Month on Infidelity Dating Website Ashley Madison and was pleasantly surprised by How nice it was.
The website is frequented by men and women alike who are bored with their marriages and are looking for some extra spice of some sort. From the little research I have done and the interview extract below, the website is geared towards making easier for women to engage in an affair anonymously.
One caller stated that she accidentally found out that her then fiancé had a subscription to the website and had already paid the $80 subscription fee. That was 2 years ago. So I imagine its in and around a $100 now. Paying that kind of subscription fee is a clear statement of intent. I’m not sure how often the subscription fee is to be paid though.
So the website released it’s annual report (yes. An annual report) on the most unfaithful neighbourhoods in Johannesburg (Jozi). And here are the winners folks! The places with the highest per capita membership, in descending order, are Jozi’s cheating hotspots (per capita basis) for 2014:
1. Dainfern 10.3%…
2. Sandhurst 9.3%
3. Greenside 8.7%
4. Rivonia 7.4%
5. Soweto 7.1%
6. Bedfordview 6.5%
7. Bryanston 6.3%
8. Glenvista 5.9%
9. Northcliff 5.5%
10. Fourways 4.9%
Here’s a little extract from an interview with the founder:
Biderman may have devised a way for married people to start affairs that has become a global phenomenon, but he also pays lots of taxes and employs hundreds of people.
“I’m clearly providing a totally legal product,” says Biderman. “It just happens to be incredibly controversial.”
AshleyMadison.com was launched when Biderman figured there was a gap in the dating marketplace: namely, somewhere that catered to women interested in having an affair as much as such sites and venues (strip clubs, massage parlours) cater to men.
“It seemed to me,” he says, “the Internet was going to be the natural place for women to gravitate towards. A woman who has worked so hard to get through university, an MBA, climbing the corporate ladder — even though she may be tempted to get with a colleague at work, the risk of both her partnership, meaning her husband, and her job, is too much.
“If she’s going to risk one (an affair or her career),” he says, “she’s going to take the marital risk, but she’s going to take it anonymously — that was the bet we were making (when we created AshleyMadison.com).”
